If you’re having trouble with Shift, like seeing a blank screen, Shift not responding, or crashing, you can try resetting the app data. A reset can often fix many issues. You can do a partial reset or a full reset. Even if your problem isn’t listed here, give these steps a try!😎
How to perform a partial app data reset
A partial reset keeps your emails, apps, and extensions but clears your open web tabs. This can help fix issues like Shift not working or showing a blank screen. Follow the step-by-step instructions below: 👇
- Close Shift completely by pressing Ctrl + Q.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard and open Task Manager.
- Select Details in the top menu
- Type "Shift" on your keyboard to find Shift.exe.
- Right-click each Shift.exe process and click End Task until there are no more Shift processes.
- Open the Windows File Explorer
-
For Windows 10:
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
- Click View, then Options, then Change folder and search options.
- In the View tab, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
-
For Windows 11:
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
- Click View, then Show, then Hidden items.
-
For Windows 10:
- Go to this folder: C:\Users[Your Name]\AppData\Local. (might be the name of your computer or similar)

How to perform a full app data reset
If a partial reset doesn’t work, try a full reset. But remember, a full reset will remove most of your Shift settings, so you’ll need to set them up again.
After a full reset, you will need to:
- Re-import any saved passwords
- Add back Chrome extensions you were previously using
- Reset any Shift-specific settings (such as link opening preferences)
The steps for a full data reset are almost identical to a partial data reset, with a few key differences. Follow the step-by-step instructions outlined below:

- Right-click each Shift.exe process and click End Task.
