You can import and export your passwords in Shift! Keep reading to learn how.

How to Import Passwords

There are two ways to import passwords into Shift: directly from your browser or from a CSV file. Browsers that are compatible with the import option are: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, and Vivaldi. Users of other browsers should follow the steps for importing or exporting using a CSV file.

Method 1: Import passwords from a supported browser

  1. Go to Quick Settings (Upper right), by clicking the gear icon
  2. Scroll down and click into ‘Advanced Settings’
  3. Click into the ‘You and Shift’ tab
  4. Click "Import" next to Import bookmarks and settings
  5. Select your browser type from the drop-down (make sure your browser is closed before this step), then click ‘Import’

You can manage your passwords by going to the Autofill section in your settings.

Method 2: Import passwords from a CSV file

Step 1: Download your saved passwords as a CSV file

We've included instructions below for how to download from Chrome. For other browsers or password managers, please go to their Help Center and search for instructions on downloading passwords.

To download your passwords to a CSV file from Chrome:

  1. Go to 'Settings'
  2. Then select 'Autofill'
  3. Then select 'Passwords'
  4. Click the 3 dots beside Saved Passwords
  5. Finally, click 'Export passwords'

Step 2: Import your passwords to Shift

Make sure your CSV file has these column names: URL, Username, and Password. If not, update you CSV file to include those column headings, otherwise the file will not import correctly into Shift.

  1. Go to Quick Settings (Upper right), by clicking on the gear icon
  2. Scroll down and click into ‘Advanced Settings’
  3. Select  the ‘Autofill and passwords’ tab
  4. Click ‘Settings’
  5. Find the Import passwords section
  6. Click "Select file"
  7. Select the CSV file you saved from your browser or password manager
  8. Click ‘Import’

After importing your passwords to Shift, delete the local CSV file to keep your passwords safe.

Troubleshooting Import Issues

  • Make sure your browser is closed (supported browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, and Vivaldi).
  • Confirm your CSV file is correctly formatted with column names: URL, Username, Password. If needed, update the column names (e.g., change "website, username, password" to "URL, username, password").
  • You can import up to 3,000 passwords at a time. For more, split them into multiple CSV files.
  • You can store up to 10,000 passwords in Shift.
