1. Ensure Shift has appropriate system access (Mac)

Shift will need system access to be able to download files to your computer. If you're on Mac, here's how to check:

  1. Choose Apple menu  System Settings
  2. Click Privacy and Security.
  3. Select Full Disk Access
  4. Find Shift and toggle it on
  5. If you don’t see the Shift app, click the Add (+) button at the bottom of the list and add Shift

*The photo above shows the Full Disk Access window with a red arrow pointing at Shift.

2. Ensure Shift has appropriate system access (Windows)

Shift will need system access to be able to download files to your computer. If you're on Windows, here's how to check:

  1. Go to Start  Settings > Privacy > File system
  2. Ensure "Allow apps to access your file system" is toggled on
  3. Check if Shift is toggled on under "Choose which apps can access your file system"

*The image above shows the file system window with the Allow apps to access your file system toggled on.

3. Change your default download location

Change your default download location to something that doesn't require a password or special permission (your downloads folder or desktop are good options).

  1. Go to Quick Settings (top-right corner of the app)
  2. Scroll down to Advanced Settings > Downloads
  3. Click Change next to Location at the top of the screen

4. Hard refresh

If downloads are stuck, refresh Shift:

  • For Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + R.
  • For Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + R.

5. Clear your Shift browser cache and cookies

Sometimes, old data can cause problems. Clear your Shift cache and cookies:

  1. Open Quick Settings (top-right).
  2. Scroll to "Advanced Settings" > "Privacy and Security" > "Clear browsing data."
  3. Select "All time" and make sure all boxes are checked.

*The photo above shows the Clear browsing data dialog with an arrow pointing to the dropdown showing All time.

6. Check your browser extensions

Some browser extensions may prevent certain files from downloading. Check for any notifications from your extensions and disable any that may be preventing your downloads from completing. Head here to learn how to manage and disable a Chrome extension in Shift.
