Having an issue with an app you've added to Shift, like login problems, loading issues, or the app being unresponsive or blank? Follow these troubleshooting steps to fix the problem. Start with Step 1 and continue down the list until the issue is resolved. 😁
1. Update Shift to the latest version
Updates are released regularly! If you haven't updated in a while, make sure you're running the latest version of Shift:
- Go to Quick Settings (top-right corner)
- Scroll down and click "Check for Updates"
- If no update is available, check the latest version in our Release Notes (these are dated).
- Download the latest version of Shift from our website.
2. Reload the app
Navigate to the app with the issue and click the "reload" (or "refresh) button in the upper left corner of your Shift view.

3. Hard refresh Shift
Perform a hard refresh by pressing Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) or Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) on your keyboard. Shift will restart automatically.
4. Clear the app's cache and cookies
Clear the cache and cookies for the specific app:
- Open the app in Shift
- Click the lock icon (next to the browser search bar)
- Select "Site settings"
- Click "Clear data"

5. Add a second instance of the app
Adding a second instance of the app creates a new cache and cookie partition:
- Add the app again (don’t delete the original!)
- Log into the new instance to see if the issue is fixed
- If it works, you can delete the first instance of the app
6. Clear the Shift browser cache & cookies
Clear browsing data to remove stale app data across Shift:
- Go to Quick Settings (top-right corner)
- Scroll down to "Advanced Settings" > "Privacy and Security"
- Select "Clear browsing data" (Basic or Advanced)
- Choose "All time" under Time Range
- Click "Clear data"
Note: You’ll be signed out of your Primary email and other apps and extensions that use it for login.
7. Perform a partial app data reset
Resetting Shift data can fix various issues, and your added emails and apps will remain intact. However, any opened web tabs will clear.
Follow our step-by-step instructions under the "Solutions" section of these articles:
8. Confirm that the issue is Shift-specific
Sometimes, the issue is with the app itself. Open the app in a native browser (like Chrome or Safari) to see if the problem happens there as well. Note: Shift apps are web-based, so there may be differences between the web and desktop/mobile versions.
